Escaflowne History #4 - The Crew of the Crusade: Dependable Outlaws

Asturia, Allen's country, promotes trade at all levels, whether state-supported or not. Although governed as a monarchy to regulate trade, its regulations are more relaxed than those of other countries. As a result, the people of Asturia in general enjoy a higher level of culture and life. The even regard the Junin (man-beasts) as their trade partners and (although not well-respected) accept them. Such successful trade makes Asturia one of the most prosperous nations in Gaea.

However, this has also made Asturia a target for bandits, robbers, and armies of other countries. In order to defend against such dangers, the kingdom had its armies stationed at various points in the territory.

The fortress of Castelo, where Hitomi and Van were protected in episode 3, is a typical example of these outposts. It housed knights sent from Palas, the capital, and 50-60 additional soldiers to protect against invasion from other countries. However, these soldiers are often outlaws feared by the locals. The crew of the Crusade (from right, Gaddes, Reeden, Kio, Piru, Teo, Ort and Katz) was no different, except for Gaddes, who knew how to behave like a professional soldier. These outlaws took joy in giving a hard time to aristocrats who were assigned to Castelo. They finally came to obey Allen once they realized he was like no other commander; he is a true knight who treats them as his equals.

The fights against Zaibach started around that time. But there is no way for Van and Allen to win this war without the diligent support of people like the Crusade crew...those who sacrifice everything for the honor of the knighthood.
